Increasingly companies transfer or second staff to other regions or other countries on a short or medium term basis. This ensures effective deployment of skilled resources, encourages inter-office communication, and contributes to employee development.
Our research has shown that many secondees feel that they are unsupported on arrival and find dealing with the domestic and other arrangements associated with their move particularly stressful. Many spend a disproportionate amount of time searching for accommodation, sorting out utilities and other day to day matters. Given their lack of familiarity with the location and the limited time they have available, some will make less than ideal choices, which in turn may impact on their effectiveness at work.
These difficulties can be even greater when families accompany the secondee. Many find themselves in unsuitable city center locations where partners can feel isolated, suitable schools are difficult to find and facilities for families are generally limited.
